What's happening

This bill criminalizes the possession of undetectable and untraceable firearms or magazines made using digital manufacturing technologies.

Why it matters

  1. Targets new technologies. By specifically referencing firearms or magazines made with digital manufacturing (like 3D printing and CNC milling), the bill addresses gaps in existing gun laws that traditional manufacturing regulations may not cover, responding to advances that make homemade guns more accessible.

  2. Enhances public safety measures. The inclusion of undetectable and untraceable firearms or magazines aims to prevent weapons that cannot be identified or tracked by law enforcement, potentially reducing the risk posed by "ghost guns" that lack serial numbers and metal components.

  3. Creates new criminal liability. Individuals found knowingly possessing these digitally manufactured, undetectable, or untraceable firearms or magazines could face felony charges, which may deter their production and possession and provide law enforcement with clearer grounds for prosecution.

  4. Reflects evolving policy needs. The bill demonstrates legislative recognition of emerging threats posed by evolving firearm manufacturing methods, indicating a shift towards modernized regulation that keeps pace with technological innovation in weapon production.
