What's happening
This bill allows commercial drivers in New York to keep their licenses for work purposes after insurance lapse, with restrictions.
Why it matters
Helps commercial drivers avoid immediate loss of livelihood. by allowing them to keep their licenses for work purposes after an insurance lapse, the bill prevents sudden unemployment for drivers who depend on their license to earn a living, even if their registration is suspended.
Limits driving strictly to work-related activities. drivers affected by this law can only use their commercial license for employment tasks, reducing risks associated with uninsured personal driving and ensuring the exception isn’t abused.
Creates a path back to full driving privileges. the law specifies that the restriction lasts only until the driver provides new proof of insurance, encouraging prompt compliance with insurance requirements while maintaining some employment continuity.
