What's happening
This bill creates a second county court judgeship in Chenango County, with the new judge also serving as family and surrogate court judge.
Why it matters
Increases judicial capacity. By adding a second county court judgeship in Chenango County, the bill aims to help address existing or anticipated case backlogs, leading to faster processing of criminal, family, and surrogate (probate) matters.
Expands judicial responsibilities. The new judge will not only serve on the county court but will also take on the roles of family court judge and surrogate, which could improve coordination and consistency across different types of cases within the county.
Potential to improve access to justice. With more judges available, residents may experience shorter wait times for hearings and more timely resolutions of both criminal and civil/family disputes, which can be particularly impactful in rural or less-populated areas like Chenango County.
