What's happening
This bill requires hospitals to provide parents of high-risk infants information about FDA-approved medication to prevent respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
Why it matters
Empowers parents with critical health information. By mandating hospitals to provide FDA-approved medication information to parents of high-risk infants, the bill helps families make informed decisions about preventing RSV, a serious respiratory infection.
Targets the most vulnerable infants. The requirement specifically applies to premature children and those under two who are at elevated risk, potentially reducing complications, hospitalizations, and healthcare costs for this vulnerable group.
Promotes consistency and equity in care. Hospitals across New York would be required to offer the same level of information, reducing disparities and ensuring that all eligible families receive up-to-date, evidence-based guidance regardless of where they seek care.
May increase awareness and uptake of preventive treatments. By formally integrating this information into hospital protocols, the bill could lead to greater use of RSV prophylaxis, helping to protect more infants during high-risk seasons.
