What's happening
This bill bans the sale of food and beverage containers with bisphenol A in New York starting December 2019, with possible temporary waivers for manufacturers.
Why it matters
Addresses public health concerns. by targeting bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical linked to potential health risks such as hormone disruption, especially for children and pregnant women, by eliminating its presence in food and beverage packaging.
Drives industry change. by compelling manufacturers to seek and implement safer alternatives to BPA in packaging, potentially accelerating innovation in food safety and packaging technology.
Balances safety with practicality. by allowing manufacturers to apply for up to two one-year waivers if they can prove no viable BPA alternatives exist, offering temporary flexibility while maintaining pressure for long-term compliance.
Could influence broader markets. since New York is a major consumer market, this regulation may encourage suppliers and manufacturers nationwide to move away from BPA in order to maintain access to New York’s market.
