What's happening

This bill prohibits the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) to aid in hunting or taking wildlife in New York.

Why it matters

  1. Defines “unmanned aerial vehicle” (UAVs or drones) clearly in state law. , closing any ambiguity about what devices are covered and ensuring the ban is enforceable as technology evolves.

  2. Directly addresses concerns about fairness and ethics in hunting. , as drones can give hunters an unfair advantage by locating, tracking, or even herding wildlife, undermining principles of “fair chase.”

  3. Aims to protect wildlife populations and their natural behaviors. , since use of UAVs could increase hunting pressure or disrupt animals in ways traditional methods do not, potentially impacting ecosystems.

  4. Responds to public and stakeholder concerns about privacy and safety. , as drone use in hunting may raise issues for landowners, other outdoor recreationists, and public perception of ethical hunting practices.
