What's happening

This bill extends the maximum period to pay delinquent property taxes in installments from 24 to 36 months.

Why it matters

  1. Provides more time for struggling property owners to pay off delinquent taxes. , potentially helping them avoid foreclosure or loss of property by spreading payments over a longer period (three years instead of two).

  2. May particularly benefit homeowners facing temporary financial hardship. (such as job loss, illness, or unexpected expenses), offering greater flexibility to catch up and retain ownership.

  3. Could impact local government cash flow. , as tax revenue from delinquent accounts would be collected over a longer timeframe, possibly affecting budgeting and services in the short term.

  4. Signals a more lenient or supportive approach by the state toward residents with tax difficulties. , which may be especially significant in times of economic downturn or rising property taxes.
