What's happening

This bill allows retirement accounts and similar assets to be used to satisfy judgments for minor victims of certain sexual offenses.

Why it matters

  1. Removes a major protection for defendants found liable for certain sexual offenses against minors. , allowing courts to seize retirement accounts and similar assets to pay civil judgments to victims—this could make financial restitution more achievable for survivors.

  2. Directly targets serious crimes involving child victims. , including first-degree rape, criminal sexual act, aggravated sexual abuse, and course of sexual conduct against a child, so only the most severe cases are affected by this change.

  3. May deter would-be offenders. by making it clear that their protected assets, previously shielded from civil claims, can now be taken to compensate victims, raising the financial stakes for committing such crimes.
