What's happening

This bill requires every public school building in New York State to employ at least one registered professional nurse.

Why it matters

  1. Guarantees that every public school building, including those in New York City, will have at least one registered professional nurse on staff. , ensuring more consistent access to health services for all students statewide.

  2. Removes previous flexibility for districts to employ a nurse only “if one is employed,”. making the presence of a registered nurse a legal requirement rather than an optional staffing decision.

  3. May improve student health outcomes and school safety. by ensuring that trained medical professionals are always available to respond to emergencies, manage chronic conditions, and provide health education within each school building.

  4. Could have budget and staffing implications for school districts,. which may need to allocate additional resources to hire and retain qualified registered nurses, especially in smaller or underfunded schools that did not previously employ school nurses.
