What's happening
This bill expands notification and comment rights for adjacent municipalities regarding zoning, planning, and land use changes within 500 feet of their borders.
Why it matters
Expands adjacent municipalities’ input. By including adoption or amendment of zoning ordinances, local laws, and comprehensive plans within 500 feet of a neighboring municipality, this bill gives adjacent municipalities a voice in more types of land use decisions that could affect them.
Longer comment period for adjacent municipalities. The bill establishes a 30-day window for neighboring municipalities to review and formally comment on proposed actions, providing them with more time to assess potential impacts and respond thoughtfully.
Increases transparency and regional coordination. Requiring full statements about proposed planning actions to be sent to both county/regional planning agencies and adjacent municipalities encourages greater transparency and better coordination on cross-border land use issues, potentially reducing conflicts and unintended consequences.
