What's happening

This bill authorizes Yonkers to create transportation improvement districts to enhance transit in key city areas.

Why it matters

  1. Targets Congestion and Accessibility. By allowing Yonkers to create transportation improvement districts in specific critical areas (like Tuckahoe Road, Yonkers Raceway, waterfronts, and neighborhood corridors), the bill aims to address congestion and improve access to business and residential zones that are key to the city’s economy and daily life.

  2. Empowers Local Decision-Making. The legislation gives the Yonkers City Council the authority to establish and manage these districts, enabling tailored solutions that reflect local needs and priorities rather than a one-size-fits-all state approach.

  3. Potential for Economic and Community Revitalization. Enhancing transportation in targeted corridors can make these areas more attractive for investment, support job creation, and boost property values, while also making it easier for residents to move around the city for work, school, and leisure.
