What's happening

This bill prohibits New York law enforcement from collecting or keeping information on individuals' political, religious, or social views unless directly linked to a criminal investigation.

Why it matters

  1. Protects individual privacy. by restricting law enforcement agencies from gathering or storing information about people’s political, religious, or social beliefs and activities unless there’s a clear connection to a criminal investigation.

  2. Reduces risk of profiling and surveillance. of individuals or groups based on their beliefs or associations, which can help prevent potential misuse of police power for political or discriminatory purposes.

  3. Sets stricter standards for data collection. by requiring “reasonable grounds” and a direct link to criminal activity before any such sensitive information can be gathered, raising the threshold for when law enforcement can intrude on civil liberties.

  4. Could increase public trust. in law enforcement agencies by addressing concerns about government overreach and wrongful monitoring of lawful activities, promoting transparency and accountability.
