What's happening

This bill allows family courts to issue orders of protection requiring individuals to stay away from assigned child protective services caseworkers.

Why it matters

  1. Enhances protection for caseworkers. By enabling courts to order individuals to stay away from child protective services (CPS) caseworkers, the bill directly addresses threats, harassment, or intimidation that caseworkers may face while performing their duties.

  2. Supports child welfare system stability. Safeguarding CPS caseworkers can help ensure that investigations and services for at-risk children continue without disruption or fear, potentially improving outcomes for vulnerable families.

  3. Elevates the seriousness of interfering with CPS work. This legal amendment recognizes the critical and sometimes dangerous nature of CPS casework, sending a message that obstructing or endangering these professionals will have legal consequences.
