What's happening

This bill requires health insurance policies in New York to cover diagnostic testing for ovarian cancer in certain at-risk women.

Why it matters

  1. Targets women at higher risk. The bill specifically focuses on women aged 40 and over who have at least one female relative with a prior history of ovarian cancer, aiming to catch the disease earlier in a population at increased risk.

  2. Mandates comprehensive coverage. Insurers must cover not just a single test, but a suite of diagnostic procedures—including pelvic exams, sonograms, CA 125 blood tests, and related lab work—ensuring a more thorough approach to early detection.

  3. Limits out-of-pocket costs. While insurance plans can still apply deductibles and coinsurance to these tests, the bill requires that cost-sharing be consistent with other benefits, potentially reducing financial barriers to critical early cancer screening.

  4. Impacts a wide range of insurance plans. The requirements apply to all major forms of regulated health insurance in New York (individual, group, and not-for-profit plans), broadening access regardless of how a person is insured.
