What's happening

This bill requires all state diesel vehicles to transition to increasing biodiesel blend levels, reaching 20% by 2021.

Why it matters

  1. Accelerates the shift to renewable fuels in state operations. , requiring government vehicles to rapidly phase in higher blends of biodiesel—potentially reducing reliance on petroleum diesel and supporting New York’s clean energy goals.

  2. Creates a guaranteed, phased market for biodiesel producers. , especially benefiting local agriculture and businesses that supply plant oils, animal fats, or recycled greases—potentially spurring economic development in these sectors.

  3. Could lower harmful emissions from state fleets. , as biodiesel blends generally emit fewer particulates, greenhouse gases, and toxic pollutants than conventional diesel, potentially improving air quality and public health, especially in urban areas.

  4. Sets a regulatory precedent for other fleets or levels of government. , signaling the state’s commitment to renewable energy and possibly encouraging similar standards in municipal fleets, contractors, or private sector transportation.
