What's happening
This bill establishes "Disaster Preparedness Week" in September and requires a public awareness campaign and annual reporting on related activities.
Why it matters
Raises the profile of disaster preparedness. By mandating a dedicated week and a statewide public awareness campaign, this bill aims to make disaster readiness a more visible and regular part of public life, which could lead to better individual and community outcomes when disasters strike.
Encourages community-wide collaboration. The campaign is designed to involve not just state agencies but also local governments, school boards, and nonprofit organizations, fostering a unified and comprehensive approach to disaster education and engagement.
Creates accountability and transparency. The inclusion of annual reporting requirements means that activities and progress related to disaster preparedness (including the effectiveness of the week and campaign) will be tracked and reported to top state officials, potentially driving ongoing improvements.
Addresses both natural and man-made disasters. By focusing on all types of emergencies, the bill ensures that preparedness education and planning are relevant to a broad range of threats, not just weather-related events.
