What's happening
This bill expands the prohibition on unauthorized and false alteration of student records to include a wider range of official student data.
Why it matters
Broadens protection to more student information. By expanding the prohibition from just grades, credits, honors, or standing to all “official records related to a student,” the bill aims to protect a much wider array of student data, including attendance, assessment results, and disciplinary records.
Addresses modern data practices. With the inclusion of “identifying data” and “individualized education programs,” the bill reflects current realities where schools collect and store more types of sensitive student information digitally, making unauthorized alterations potentially more damaging.
Strengthens student privacy and integrity of records. By criminalizing unauthorized changes to a broader range of student records, the amendment seeks to uphold the accuracy and trustworthiness of official school documents, which are often used for further education, employment, or legal matters.
