What's happening
This bill creates a new class C felony for unauthorized use of commercial or municipal vehicles without owner or authority consent.
Why it matters
Raises the stakes for theft or misuse of commercial and municipal vehicles. by making unauthorized use a class C felony, which could mean longer prison sentences and higher fines compared to previous penalties.
Targets specific vehicle types. including those owned by businesses and local governments—potentially aiming to deter crimes that disrupt public services or commerce, such as stealing buses, sanitation trucks, or utility vehicles.
Applies even if the person simply rides in or exercises control over the vehicle without consent. , not just in cases of outright theft, meaning a broader range of conduct could now trigger serious felony charges.
Could have significant personal and professional consequences. for individuals accused, including loss of employment opportunities, since a class C felony is a serious criminal record that may be difficult to expunge.
