What's happening
This bill updates election law language regarding how votes are cast in New York City primary elections.
Why it matters
Reflects modern voting technology. By replacing the outdated reference to "voting machines" with more general language about ballots "used for casting a vote," the bill acknowledges the variety of voting methods now in use (such as paper ballots and electronic systems), ensuring laws keep pace with current and future technologies.
Reduces confusion and legal ambiguity. Updating the terminology helps avoid misinterpretation or legal challenges based on obsolete language, making the election process clearer for both voters and election officials.
Improves legislative flexibility. The change allows for easier adoption of new voting equipment or procedures in the future without needing further legislative amendments, supporting adaptability in election administration.
