What's happening

This bill requires members of economic development councils, including volunteers, to file annual financial disclosure forms.

Why it matters

  1. Expands transparency requirements. for economic development councils, including unpaid/volunteer members, increasing public access to potential conflicts of interest among those influencing major state economic decisions.

  2. Levels the playing field. by holding volunteer council members to the same financial disclosure standards as elected officials and government employees, recognizing the significant influence these volunteers can have on high-stakes economic initiatives.

  3. May deter conflicts of interest and self-dealing. within economic development projects, potentially increasing public trust and reducing the risk of corruption or favoritism in the allocation of state resources.

  4. Could impact volunteer recruitment. by introducing new compliance requirements, possibly discouraging some qualified individuals from serving unless they are willing to disclose personal financial information.
