What's happening

This bill requires state agencies to maintain and secure unused state-owned properties and reimburses local governments for related emergency or maintenance costs.

Why it matters

  1. Reduces local financial burdens. by ensuring that cities and towns are reimbursed for emergency or maintenance costs when they step in to care for unused state-owned properties, potentially freeing up local resources for other needs.

  2. Promotes public safety and community well-being. by requiring state agencies to actively maintain and secure vacant properties, which helps prevent hazards like vandalism, squatting, or unsafe conditions that can arise from neglect.

  3. Holds state agencies accountable. for the properties they manage, incentivizing them to either find new uses for unused buildings or keep them in good condition, rather than leaving them to deteriorate in local communities.
