What's happening

This bill allows villages to appoint a non-voting high school senior as a student representative on their board of trustees.

Why it matters

  1. Gives high school seniors a formal platform to voice youth perspectives. on issues before village boards, increasing the visibility and relevance of student concerns in local decision-making.

  2. Creates a structured, limited-term civic experience for young people. , helping to foster early engagement in government and potentially building a pipeline of future community leaders.

  3. Ensures student participation is meaningful but bounded. the representative can attend and participate in all public sessions and hearings, but cannot vote, attend private (executive) sessions, or receive compensation, balancing youth involvement with board confidentiality and accountability.
