What's happening

This bill allows fire districts to impose special ad valorem levies and special assessments on otherwise tax-exempt properties.

Why it matters

  1. Expands fire district funding sources. by allowing them to collect revenue from properties that were previously tax-exempt, such as those owned by nonprofits, religious institutions, or government entities—potentially increasing available resources for fire protection services.

  2. Shifts some financial responsibility. for fire protection onto organizations and institutions that benefit from these services but were previously exempt from paying for them, which could lead to changes in budgeting and operations for those property owners.

  3. May lead to increased costs for certain community services. (like hospitals, schools, or places of worship) that rely on tax-exempt status, possibly impacting their ability to provide services if they must now pay these levies or assessments.

  4. Addresses perceived funding imbalances. in communities where a large percentage of property is tax-exempt, aiming to ensure that all beneficiaries of fire protection contribute to its funding, which could reduce the burden on other taxpayers.
