What's happening
This bill establishes a temporary moratorium allowing the feeding of white-tailed deer in Sullivan County until January 1, 2024.
Why it matters
Temporarily allows residents of Sullivan County to feed white-tailed deer, overriding previous bans. this could impact local wildlife behaviors, human-deer interactions, and potentially benefit individuals who feed deer for recreation or tourism.
May influence deer population dynamics. increased feeding can lead to higher deer survival rates, potentially affecting local ecosystems, agriculture (through crop browsing), and the spread of diseases among deer or to humans and livestock.
Signals possible future policy changes based on deer population. the moratorium could end earlier if the legislature finds the deer population has sufficiently increased, indicating the law is responsive to ecological or community feedback.
Reflects local priorities or concerns. the bill addresses specific issues or pressures unique to Sullivan County, such as economic interests, wildlife management challenges, or resident values regarding deer.
