What's happening

This bill requires New York hospitals to implement procedural checklists for all intensive care unit medical procedures to improve patient safety.

Why it matters

  1. Mandates hospitals to create and consistently use checklists for every ICU procedure, which can help standardize care, reduce human error, and promote best practices during high-risk interventions.

  2. Aims to directly reduce hospital-acquired infections and related complications, potentially leading to better patient outcomes and lower healthcare costs associated with preventable mistakes and prolonged hospital stays.

  3. Requires hospitals to ensure that all necessary equipment, supplies, and trained personnel are available before procedures begin, addressing common causes of procedural delays or errors that can jeopardize patient safety.

  4. Sets a strict timeline (180 days) for the Department of Health to implement these rules, signaling urgency and prioritizing patient safety improvements across all New York hospitals.
