What's happening
This bill allows certified handicapped individuals to use ATVs on public lands for hunting purposes in New York.
Why it matters
Expands outdoor access for people with disabilities. By allowing certified handicapped individuals to use ATVs for hunting on public lands, the bill makes outdoor recreation and hunting more accessible to those with mobility challenges, helping to ensure equitable opportunities.
Addresses transportation barriers. Many public lands can be difficult or impossible to navigate for hunters with disabilities. Allowing ATVs specifically for these individuals removes a significant obstacle to participation.
Potential impacts on land management and enforcement. Granting this exemption may require land managers to update signage, monitor ATV use more closely, and clarify definitions of “certified handicapped individuals” for compliance, potentially affecting administrative processes on public lands.
