What's happening

The bill prohibits issuing licenses to sell certain alcoholic beverages for on-premises consumption within 200 feet of schools or places of worship.

Why it matters

  1. Limits new bars and restaurants near schools and places of worship. By setting a strict 200-foot buffer, the bill could significantly restrict where new establishments serving alcohol can open, especially in densely built neighborhoods with many schools or religious sites.

  2. Potentially impacts business opportunities and neighborhood character. The measure may affect economic development and nightlife options in certain areas, possibly preventing new businesses from opening and shaping the types of venues that can operate in affected neighborhoods.

  3. Responds to community concerns about youth and sensitive locations. The proximity ban aims to address worries about underage drinking, noise, and other issues that can arise when alcohol is served near schools or places of worship, reflecting ongoing debates about public safety and community standards.
