What's happening
This bill allows scores from international baccalaureate exams to qualify students for the New York State merit scholarship.
Why it matters
Expands scholarship eligibility. to students who excel in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, not just those who take Advanced Placement (AP) or Regents exams, recognizing a broader range of academic achievement.
Promotes educational equity. by giving IB students the same opportunity to qualify for state merit scholarships as their peers in other academic tracks, which may be important for those attending schools that offer IB instead of AP courses.
Encourages high academic performance. in IB programs by making these exam scores count toward state merit-based financial aid, potentially motivating more students to pursue challenging coursework.
May increase access to college funding. for a diverse group of students, as the IB program is offered in various types of schools—including international and public schools—potentially reaching students who were previously excluded from this scholarship.
