What's happening
This bill adds library employees to the list of protected workers under the assault law, increasing penalties for assaults against them.
Why it matters
Expanding protection to library employees. signals a recognition of the increasing risks faced by public-facing workers beyond traditional emergency and transit staff, acknowledging that libraries can be sites of conflict or violence.
Elevated penalties for assaults on library staff. may serve as a deterrent, potentially reducing incidents of violence in library settings and encouraging a safer environment for both employees and patrons.
Aligning library staff with other protected occupations. (like nurses, transit workers, and emergency responders) underscores the importance of their public service roles and the expectation that they should be able to perform their duties without fear of harm.
This change may impact library operations and staffing. , as increased legal protections could help with staff recruitment and retention, while also signaling to the public that aggressive behavior in libraries will be taken seriously by law enforcement and the justice system.
