What's happening

This bill authorizes New York State to create up to one billion dollars in debt to fund Alzheimer’s disease research through grants and collaborations, pending voter approval in the 2018 general election.

Why it matters

  1. Significant new funding stream. By creating up to $1 billion in state debt, the bill would provide an unprecedented and dedicated pool of money for Alzheimer’s research, potentially accelerating breakthroughs in understanding, treating, and preventing the disease.

  2. Broad eligibility for funding. The funds could support state and local agencies, not-for-profits, and higher education institutions, expanding research opportunities across New York’s academic and medical communities and fostering collaboration.

  3. Potential economic and public health impact. Investment in Alzheimer’s research could lead to new treatments, clinical trials, and possibly cost savings for the state in the long run by reducing the burden of care for Alzheimer’s patients and their families.

  4. Voter empowerment and accountability. Because the measure requires approval by voters in a general election, it gives the public a direct say in whether the state should take on debt for this purpose, ensuring democratic input and oversight.
