What's happening

This bill requires New York driver's licenses to include space for listing a health care proxy agent's name and contact information.

Why it matters

  1. Adds a clear place on every New York driver's license for listing a health care proxy's name and contact information, making it easier for first responders and medical staff to quickly identify and contact your chosen agent in an emergency.

  2. Empowers individuals to make their health care wishes known and accessible, especially if they cannot communicate during a medical crisis, potentially improving the chances that their medical preferences will be respected.

  3. Could reduce confusion or delays around decision-making in critical situations by providing a straightforward way to link a person’s identity with their health care agent, avoiding the need to search for separate legal documents.

  4. May encourage more people to designate a health care proxy and complete related forms, knowing that this information can be easily referenced and kept with their primary form of identification.
