What's happening

This bill allows hunting of deer and bear with specified firearms and bows in Broome County west of the Susquehanna River, excluding Binghamton, during certain dates.

Why it matters

  1. Expands local hunting opportunities. By allowing deer and bear hunting with a broader range of weapons (including pistols, shotguns, crossbows, muzzle loaders, rifles, and long bows) in Broome County west of the Susquehanna River (excluding Binghamton), the bill could increase access for hunters who prefer or require different equipment.

  2. Creates localized wildlife management flexibility. The bill introduces specific hunting dates and weapon types for this region, reflecting a tailored approach to local wildlife population control, which could help manage deer and bear numbers and reduce related problems such as crop damage or vehicle collisions.

  3. Excludes urban areas for safety. By specifically excluding the city of Binghamton from these expanded hunting provisions, the legislation addresses public safety concerns and potential conflicts in more densely populated areas.

  4. Temporary measure with built-in sunset. The bill is set to expire on October 1, 2019, meaning its impacts are temporary and will require legislative review or renewal, allowing for assessment of its effectiveness and any unintended consequences.
