What's happening
This bill requires state and local police to notify nearby licensed day care centers of emergency situations such as school evacuations or active shooter incidents.
Why it matters
Enhances child safety protocols by ensuring that day care centers are quickly informed of nearby emergencies, allowing them to take prompt protective actions (such as lockdowns or evacuations).
Creates a formal, time-bound requirement (notification within 30 minutes by phone) for police to communicate with day care facilities, reducing the risk of delays or missed alerts during critical incidents.
Requires day care centers to designate and share specific emergency contact information with law enforcement, improving the reliability and effectiveness of emergency communication.
Broadens the scope of emergency notifications to include not just K-12 schools but also colleges and universities, recognizing that incidents at higher education institutions can also pose risks to nearby child care facilities.
