What's happening
This bill requires a uniform standard for measuring and enforcing how close certain sex offenders on probation or parole can live to school grounds.
Why it matters
Creates a single, statewide method. for measuring how close sex offenders on probation or parole can live to schools, replacing potentially inconsistent local standards and reducing confusion for law enforcement, courts, and offenders.
Mandates clear, published enforcement rules. by requiring the state to post the measurement methodology online, which increases transparency and allows the public, advocates, and offenders to easily understand the law.
Specifies exactly how distance is measured. from the nearest property line of the school grounds to the nearest property line of the offender’s residence—removing ambiguity that could previously lead to legal challenges or loopholes.
Could impact housing access and recidivism. for affected offenders, as a uniform, strictly defined standard may restrict where they can live and potentially affect their ability to reintegrate, while also aiming to better protect children around schools.
