What's happening

This bill proposes to increase the veterans’ civil service exam credits in New York, doubling the points for appointments and promotions.

Why it matters

  1. Doubles the civil service exam credits for veterans, making their applications more competitive. this change significantly increases the advantage veterans receive when seeking state and local government jobs or promotions, potentially leading to greater representation in public sector employment.

  2. Enhanced credits for disabled veterans. the bill also increases the extra points for veterans disabled in the line of duty, further prioritizing those who have sustained service-related injuries in hiring and promotion decisions.

  3. Impacts both initial appointments and career advancement. by raising the credits for both original appointments and promotional exams, the amendment helps veterans not only enter civil service but also advance more easily within it, which could affect workplace dynamics and opportunities for non-veteran candidates.

  4. Reflects a policy choice to further recognize military service. the proposal signals New York State’s intention to more aggressively reward military service and sacrifice, potentially encouraging veterans to remain in or relocate to New York for civil service careers.
