What's happening
This bill requires businesses in New York to collect additional identification, like a PIN or password, for credit and debit card transactions.
Why it matters
Aims to strengthen consumer protection against credit and debit card fraud. by mandating the use of a PIN or password for every card transaction, making it harder for stolen or skimmed cards to be used without the owner’s knowledge.
Impacts everyday purchasing habits. by requiring all cardholders to provide an extra verification step, which could mean longer wait times at checkout and adjustments for both customers and businesses.
Forces credit services businesses to update account management practices,. as they must require a PIN or password not only for transactions but also as a condition for opening and maintaining credit card accounts, potentially reducing unauthorized account access.
Does not allow sensitive information (like PINs or passwords) to be written down during transactions,. reducing the risk of physical data compromise at the point of sale and emphasizing secure, electronic verification methods.
