What's happening
This bill requires New York to convert interstate highway exit numbers to a mileage-based system by January 1, 2021.
Why it matters
Consistency with Federal Standards. By aligning New York's interstate exit numbering with the federal mileage-based system, the bill aims to improve consistency for drivers, especially those traveling across state lines, reducing confusion and supporting navigation technologies.
Cost-Effectiveness. The bill specifically directs the use of existing signage and add-on plates where possible, which may help minimize the costs and logistical challenges of implementing the new numbering system.
Transition Period for Drivers. For two years after the conversion, both the old and new exit numbers will be displayed at each interchange. This dual signage should ease the adjustment for residents, commuters, emergency responders, and businesses that rely on the current numbering.
Uniformity Across Agencies. The legislation requires the Department of Transportation and the Thruway Authority to cooperate and create uniform standards for the new exit signs, which can help ensure clarity and avoid inconsistencies across the state’s highways.
