What's happening
This bill requires commercial vehicles, public buses, and school buses in New York to have ignition interlock devices, with penalties for violations.
Why it matters
Mandates ignition interlock devices for a broad range of vehicles. , including all large commercial trucks (over 18,000 lbs), public buses, and school buses, significantly expanding current requirements beyond individuals convicted of DWI.
Aims to prevent impaired driving before it starts. by requiring drivers to pass a breathalyzer test every time they operate these vehicles, not just after a DWI conviction, potentially reducing accidents and enhancing passenger safety.
Establishes a clear penalty structure. for non-compliance—including escalating fines and possible jail time—creating strong financial and legal incentives for companies and agencies to comply.
Could increase operational costs and logistical hurdles. for businesses and school districts, as they must install, maintain, and monitor ignition interlock devices on large fleets, possibly affecting service delivery and budgets.
