What's happening

The bill exempts students in school or university-sponsored non-commercial fishing classes or clinics from fishing license requirements.

Why it matters

  1. Expands hands-on fishing education. By removing license barriers for students in school or university non-commercial fishing classes or clinics, the bill encourages more educational programs that can teach ecological awareness, outdoor skills, and conservation practices.

  2. Lowers cost and administrative hurdles. The exemption eliminates licensing fees and paperwork for participants, making it easier for educational institutions to offer these programs and for students to participate, regardless of their financial situation.

  3. Maintains safeguards for bait fish. The bill still prohibits taking bait fish by net or trap during these classes, which helps protect certain aquatic species and maintains ecological balance while still promoting learning.
