What's happening
This bill requires New York City to implement dedicated crossing times for pedestrians on all major thoroughfares.
Why it matters
Creates a legal requirement for “dedicated crossing times,” meaning there will be specific intervals when only pedestrians—not vehicles—can cross, aiming to improve safety at busy intersections.
Empowers the city’s transportation commissioner to determine which streets are considered “major thoroughfares” and to set the timing and duration of pedestrian-only crossing intervals, giving flexibility based on traffic and local needs.
May lead to changes in traffic light patterns across the city, potentially reducing pedestrian injuries and fatalities, but also potentially affecting vehicle flow and commute times on high-traffic streets.
Signals a shift in city policy to prioritize pedestrian movement and safety over vehicle throughput in areas with dense foot traffic, which could influence future urban planning and street design.
