What's happening
This bill gives harbor masters and bay constables the authority to arrest on warrants within their area of employment.
Why it matters
Empowers local maritime law enforcement. By allowing harbor masters and bay constables to arrest on warrants, the bill strengthens their ability to directly enforce the law rather than relying on other police agencies, which can lead to faster and more efficient responses to violations in their jurisdictions.
Enhances public safety and accountability on waterways. With warrant arrest authority, these officials can more effectively address crimes or outstanding warrants related to boating, fishing, and waterfront activities, potentially deterring illegal activity and increasing compliance with maritime regulations.
Clarifies legal authority and reduces jurisdictional confusion. The amendment formally recognizes and expands the legal powers of harbor masters and bay constables, reducing ambiguity about their roles and ensuring they can act decisively within their designated areas, which benefits both law enforcement coordination and the public.
