What's happening
This bill designates monk (Quaker) parakeets as protected birds under New York environmental conservation law.
Why it matters
Monk (Quaker) parakeets would gain legal protections similar to native birds. , meaning it would be illegal to harm, capture, or possess them without a permit—potentially reducing culling or extermination efforts by individuals or agencies.
The change reflects a shift in how New York treats non-native but established wildlife. , recognizing that these parakeets, despite being introduced, are now seen as worthy of protection rather than as pests or invasive species.
This amendment could affect utility companies, property managers, and others who have sometimes targeted monk parakeets for nest removal. , requiring them to follow stricter procedures and potentially seek special permits before intervening with these birds or their nests.
