What's happening

This bill expands the definition of "caregiver" to include those caring for seniors or persons with illness or disability, not just children.

Why it matters

  1. Broadens protections for vulnerable groups. By including those caring for seniors and people with illnesses or disabilities, the bill recognizes that these populations are also at risk and need safeguards similar to those established for children.

  2. Expands background check requirements. Individuals employed to provide 15+ hours of care per week to seniors or persons with illnesses/disabilities will now be subject to criminal history checks, aiming to increase safety for care recipients.

  3. Affects hiring practices in home care. Employers and families hiring caregivers for seniors or people with illnesses/disabilities will need to ensure compliance with background check laws, potentially raising awareness and standards in the home care industry.
