What's happening

This bill increases the maximum fine for telemarketing law violations in New York from eleven thousand to twenty thousand dollars per violation.

Why it matters

  1. Increasing the maximum fine to $20,000 per violation raises the financial risk for telemarketers who break the law. , making it potentially much more expensive to ignore or violate telemarketing regulations.

  2. The higher penalties could serve as a stronger deterrent for companies considering aggressive or deceptive telemarketing practices. , potentially leading to fewer unwanted or illegal calls for New Yorkers.

  3. By updating the fine, the law reflects inflation and changing economic realities, ensuring that penalties remain meaningful and not just a “cost of doing business” for violators.

  4. Consumers may benefit from increased enforcement and compliance. , as state regulators have a greater tool to hold violators accountable and possibly fund further consumer protection efforts.
