What's happening
This bill updates laws to require water suppliers to assess and report vulnerabilities to terrorist and cyber attacks, strengthening water supply security.
Why it matters
Expands and clarifies the definition of what must be included in water supply emergency plans. , specifically mandating that all vulnerability assessments now address both terrorist and cyber attack risks. This means water suppliers will need to consider a broader range of potential threats.
Sets clear deadlines for water suppliers to initiate and update vulnerability analyses. , requiring immediate action from those whose plans do not yet include cyber attack assessments. This creates a sense of urgency for compliance and ensures up-to-date security planning.
Requires that vulnerability assessments be prepared in consultation with law enforcement. , fostering coordination between water suppliers and local/state law enforcement to improve the quality and relevance of threat analyses.
Ensures that sensitive recommendations and findings remain confidential and are shared only with key security and emergency officials. , balancing the need for oversight with the protection of critical infrastructure information, which reduces the risk of public disclosure of vulnerabilities.
