What's happening
This bill requires health insurance policies in New York to cover replacement prosthetic limbs for subscribers and dependent children under 19.
Why it matters
Ensures continuous access to functional prosthetics. for children under 19, acknowledging that children outgrow or wear out prosthetics more frequently and may need replacements as prescribed by a doctor.
Removes financial barriers for families. with insured children who require prosthetic limbs, as replacement costs can be significant and were not always covered by insurance.
Recognizes the importance of timely prosthetic replacement. due to damage or theft for both adult subscribers and dependent children, supporting mobility, independence, and quality of life.
Aligns insurance coverage with medical necessity. by requiring insurers to honor physician prescriptions for prosthetic replacements, rather than imposing arbitrary limits.
