What's happening
This bill requires that eligible veterans who co-own property must have their real property tax exemptions combined rather than optional.
Why it matters
Ensures full tax relief for eligible veterans and their families. By requiring that exemptions be combined (instead of making it optional), co-owning veterans and their spouses will receive the maximum property tax benefit they qualify for, reducing their financial burden.
Closes potential gaps in exemption allocation. The current "may" language could result in inconsistent application across localities or misunderstandings, potentially leading some veterans to miss out on the full exemption. The change to "shall" standardizes the process.
Better supports surviving spouses. The bill clarifies that an unremarried surviving spouse can receive not only their own exemption but also any exemption the deceased spouse was entitled to, ensuring ongoing support for families of veterans.
