What's happening
The bill requires public high schools in New York to provide voter registration materials and forms to eligible students.
Why it matters
Expanding Civic Engagement Early. By requiring high schools to distribute voter registration forms and materials to eligible students, the bill aims to foster civic participation and encourage lifelong voting habits among young adults.
Reducing Barriers to Registration. Making voter registration forms readily available in high school offices and ensuring students are informed about their availability removes logistical hurdles that can prevent young people from registering.
Targeted Outreach to New Voters. The bill specifically directs schools to provide registration forms to students who will be 18 by the next general election, ensuring that those newly eligible to vote are not overlooked during a critical transition period.
Institutional Accountability. The legislation places responsibility on both school districts and the state education department to coordinate with the board of elections, ensuring consistency and oversight in how forms and information are distributed across all public high schools.
