What's happening

This bill creates a prom and graduation safety program to provide educational materials on substance abuse and safety for adolescents.

Why it matters

  1. Addresses a high-risk period. By targeting prom and graduation season, the program aims to reduce substance abuse and risky behaviors during times when teens are statistically more likely to engage in dangerous activities.

  2. Cross-agency collaboration. The requirement for cooperation between the Office of Mental Health, Department of Health, State Education Department, and State Police may lead to more comprehensive and consistent messaging and resources across schools and communities.

  3. Accessible, updated resources. By mandating that educational materials be made available online and updated annually, the bill ensures that information is widely accessible and remains relevant to current substance use trends among adolescents.

  4. Involvement of families and educators. Including parents, guardians, and educators in the outreach recognizes the critical role adults play in prevention, potentially fostering more supportive and informed environments for students.
