What's happening
This bill requires colleges and social services to notify applicants that work-study, internships, and similar placements count toward public assistance work requirements.
Why it matters
Helps low-income students. By clarifying that work-study and internships count toward public assistance work requirements, the bill makes it easier for students on public assistance to keep their benefits while pursuing their education or training.
Reduces confusion and bureaucratic barriers. Many students may not know that their campus-based placements satisfy work requirements. Mandating clear notification on both college and public assistance forms ensures students don't miss out on benefits due to lack of information.
Supports educational attainment and workforce readiness. Recognizing academic work placements as valid work activities encourages students to engage in them without risking their public assistance, potentially leading to higher graduation rates and better job prospects.
Promotes interagency coordination. By requiring both educational institutions and social services to provide this information, the bill fosters better alignment between higher education and social support systems, streamlining the experience for students who rely on both.
